Provenance : Charles Russell Lowell, Sr. (1807-1870), brother of James Russell Lowell (signatures on front pastedown and elsewhere) -- Charles Russell Lowell Jr. (1835-1864) Harvard valedictorian, General. During the Civil War he commanded Massachusetts cavalry regiments, was wounded twice and killed at Cedar Creek. -- The present owner, by descent. FIRST EDITION, THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF THE PEQUOT WAR and the "Mistic Massacre." After several killings of English settlers in the Connecticut valley, war was declared against the Pequots. Under orders from the provincial legislatures, John Mason of Connecticut and John Underhill of Massachusetts raised a considerable force of well-armed militia and Mohegan allies. On May 26, 1637, an overwhelming assault was mounted against the Pequot village and fort at Mystic. In the final conflagration some 500 Indians died. Mason's manuscript report on this sanguinary campaign, prepared for the Connecticut authorities, was drawn upon by Increase Mather in A Relation of the Troubles (Boston, 1677). Mason's grandson, recognizing the importance of the account, arranged for early historian Thomas Prince (1687-1758) to edit and publish Mason's vivid narrative.
