MATHER, COTTON Magnalia Christi Americana; or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from the First Planting in the Year 1620 unto the Year of our Lord, 1698 . London: Printed for Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. First edition. 19th century calf, covers triple ruled and stamped in gilt with floral cornerpieces, spine tooled and lettered in gilt with raised bands and red morocco lettering labels, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Folio, 12 x 7 3/4 inches (31 x 20 cm); full-sheet folding engraved map, [30], 38, [1], 75, [1], 238, [1], 125-222; 100; [1] 88 (with mispagination at p. 29); 118; [2] (ad leaf). Collation by signatures reveals that the main title is an unsigned singleton, lacking *1 (believed blank); 6m2 is not present (also a probable blank, as it occurs at the end of the sixth book; comparison with the John Adams copy confirms no textual hiatus and the same pagination). The errata leaves, which were not issued until after publication, are not present in this copy. 7p4 is the single advertisement leaf. A full collation of this copy by signatures is available upon request.General title trimmed and inlaid, map lined, repairs to corners and short tears, margins closely trimmed at places, covers scratched with a few nicks to spine, extremities rubbed, old dealer description to front endpaper and neat bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. First edition of "the most famous American book of colonial times and the indispensable source for colonial social history" (Streeter). This copy retains the full-sheet folding map of New England and New York in sound clean condition, although mounted on linen, and it has the final leaf of advertisements for books printed for Thomas Parkhurst at the rear. The seven parts in the work discuss the settlement of New England and the lives of its early magistrates and governors, the history of Harvard College and the New England Church. Included is the Hannah Duston captivity narrative, an account of the Salem witch trials, The Wars of the Lord (dealing with dissident religious sects etc. and much else). Howes M-391; Sabin 46392; Streeter Sale I, 658; Church 806. C Estate of Helen S. Cooper and Herman E. Cooper
