MAZZOCCHI, Alessio Simmaco. In mutilum Campani amphitheatri titulum.Neapoli, Muscae, 1727 4to, 225x168 mm; full vellum binding. Blue edges. Woodcut coats of Capua on titlepage. 2 folded plates engraving on copper in the text with the signature of the drawer (Cyrillus) and incisor (F. de Grado). Initial letter with ornaments. A few pages with slight signes of foxing. Nice specimen.
First edition. The volume treated on on the amphitheater of Capua, a work of extreme erudition by Mazzocchi, the result of careful study of the sources, here widely reported, and comparisons with other similar buildings. The book is a complete monography and it is rich in material.Taking inspiration from the discovery of a fragment of gravestone at the Capua amphitheater, the author, through the testimonies of ancient writers, reconstructs the primordial form of the building, and above all the activities that were carried out inside. Particularly interesting is the extensive chapter on the application of the population of Campania in all kinds of games and sports activities, especially gladiators, as well as hunting, equestrian and gymnastics, the practice of baths and gymnasiums. The part dedicated to the description of the amphitheater of Capua is supported by the representation offered on the plates, where are illustrated the ruins, the reconstructive idea of ​​the ancient building, its section, the planimetry, the inscriptions and marble found there .
