Original sketchbook containing designs for Dutch travel posters.
Holland: August 1908. Oblong folio (215 x 270 mm). Manuscript title, 38 drawings in pencil, watercolor, chalk and guasche to rectos only (many in color), 2 small caricatures to upper cover. Drawings inside "Jen Brink's Schetsboek," most likely purchased in Volendam, printed boards backed with cloth. Condition: upper cover dampstained, soiled, upper hinge cracked with upper cover starting to detach. album containing charming vignettes and full designs for possible travel posters, in the competant hand of the professional artist helen madeleine mckie Best known for her 1948 lithographic poster of Waterloo Station in England, this album lends insight to the artist as she travelled Holland sketching portraits from life, studied Amsterdam's famous museums, and completed cityscapes. Here we see a young artist finding her hand as she attempted to secure poster commissions from the well-known firm of R. Tuck and Sons. Included, among others, are several finished designs advertising the city of Volendam, sketches from the day of the Queen of Holland's birthday, the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam, men in military uniform, and numerous drawings of children, Dutch cheese-makers, and fisherman. On the endpapers are extensive lists in McKie's hand of possible designs for the R. Tuck & Sons Company, descriptions of the drawings herein, and dates of the places she visited. These include The Hague, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Volendam, Delft, and Leiden. an alluring travel sketchbook.
