Woodville's esteemed medical botany, cataloguing the healing qualities of all manner of plants, with lovely hand-colored plates after James Sowerby of which Woodville notes in his preface "are not less conspicuous in the correctness than in the beauty of his designs." This copy without the frontispiece portrait, a not uncommon deficiency, since the work was issued in parts, with the portrait apparently to be procured later. Also, lacking four plates that have been excised: Plate 53 - Malva Sylvestris (Common Mallow); Plate 80 - Dianthus Caryophyllis (Clove Pink); Plate 141 - Rosa Gallica (Red Officinal Rose); and Plate 247 - Paeonia Officinalis (Common Peony). Lot Amendments Condition: Joints cracked or tender; light foxing or offset to many of the tissue guards, 3 tissue guards are lacking, a few with tears; occasional very light foxing to the plates, plates 90-92 more heavily foxed along with adjacent text pages, else very good, plates clean and of exceptional quality.
