Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 28 August 1959. A remarkable object intended to provide a devotional framework for the curing of ills, composed of delicately carved wood panels of open fretwork, which were joined back to back with a piece of silk between to form the leaves at the center of the book. At opening is a brief prayer in Latin, followed by the 15 page manuscript list headed "Verzaichnus der Heilthumer so in disem Biechlein verfast sein." This listing of terms--reflecting the embodiment of Christ and the names of the Apostles, the Martyrs and the Saints--corresponds to the various compartments on each of the wood panels. On these panels, each saint is associated iconographically with an object, which include flowers, herbs, tools, or places which are represented with an architectural detail. This devotional stems from the medieval tradition of using images and icons in the healing process, and venerating the images of saints and praying for their intercession.
