MEDIEVAL CHARTER. Grant of Ralph, son of Martin de Mari, of a yearly rent of sixpence as a 'luminarius' [a tribute of candles] at the altar of St Eloi [Eligius] in an unidentified church, for the salvation of his soul and those of his parents, the sixpence being a yearly rent which he is accustomed to receive from one Thomas Espeliun for his messuage at 'Regwey', to be held of Ralph in return for payment of one rose as quitrent ['de forgabulo'] at midsummer, MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 9 November 1278, 11 lines in a cursive Anglicana script, 78 x 173mm , seal tag (lacking seal).

A FINE AND EARLY EXAMPLE OF ANGLICANA SCRIPT , recording an unusual form of ecclesiastical donation. Although the charter rather oddly does not accurately identify either the church which is to benefit from the grant, nor the whereabouts of the property from which payment is provided, a localisation in north-east Kent is suggested by two named witnesses with possible connections in the area: these include Geoffrey de Chelde, who also appears in a charter of 1293 relating to property at Thornden in Swalecliffe, Kent (Canterbury Cathedral Archives DCc-ChAnt/T/8). The dating by anno domini rather than regnal year may suggest that the recipient was a religious house rather than a parish church. Christie's are grateful for the assistance of Christopher Whittick in the cataloguing of this lot .
