Menashe Kadishman (Israel, Tel Aviv 1932 - 2015) Sheep Signed and dated 85 l.m. Oil on paper, 50.6 x 49.5 cm Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist (circa 1988) N.B.: The sheep are the leading theme in the artworks of Menashe Kadishman This topic refers to, on the one hand, his personal life as a shepherd in a kibbutz at the beginning of the nineteen-fifties and to leading the Jewish people back to the promised land, on the other hand. Kadishman divided his sheep into different categories: rams for reproduction, pregnant ewes and animals for slaughter. Each category is assigned its own colour, which was then applied to the animals fur. This is how Kadishman created his own colour palette. When the artist was asked to join the Venice Biennale he, inspired by his living palette of colour, turned the Israeli pavilion into an actual sheepfold. His painted sheep where the topic of the day at this Biennale and brought him international fame. Kadishman still produces colourful and expressive painting, originating from his time as shepherd. Painting as well as shepherding has a magical effect on Kadishman, which nearly results in the surrealistic.
