Title: Menu for the Los Angeles Japanese restaurant that introduced sushi to America Author: Place: Los Angeles Publisher: Date: ca. 1960 Description: Kawafuku. 2 pp. menu. 11½x9½". Original decorative color cover. Rare ephemera. In 1966, the restaurant began advertising a new attraction– Sushi, reportedly the first appearance of this new cuisine in America. It caught on quickly, with a professional Sushi chef installed in a Sushi bar on the 2nd floor of the restaurant. This menu, probably dated some years earlier, does not mention “Sushi”, but offers Tempura and Teriyaki Dinners (at $3-4) as well as Sukiyaki, Sashimi, Tendon, Oyako and Unagi Donburi. The oldest Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles, dating to 1916, after the death of its founder, the Kawafuku cafe opened in 1932 in the “Little Tokyo” section of Los Angeles. Shuttered during the sad Internment years of World War II, it reopened again in 1947, proudly advertising that the food of this “Sukiyaki house” was “served by girls in Kimonos.” Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 276242
