In Separate but Together, a cluster of abstracted faces sit peering at a spider-like form, who reaches across the thick line that separates them. Michael Camakaris is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice encompasses drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and ceramics. Instantly recognisable by his distinctive artistic thumbprint, characterised by fine detailing and layered graphical mark-making, he is a skilled draftsman whose compositions are bold and often references art history; drawing from surrealism to dada and abstraction. His work is conceptually driven, commenting on industrialisation and the environment through the depiction of apocalyptic scenes and sensitive renderings of the natural world. Working in the Arts Project studio since 2010, Camakaris has exhibited widely. He presented his first solo exhibition Five Bulls, No Bull as part of the Shepparton Art Museum Drawing Wall Commission in 2013 and completed an internship at Leonard Joel in 2019.
