MICHELOT, Henri and Laurent BRÉMOND (fl.1694-1730). An untitled collection of 14 charts of the Mediterranean. Marseille: Michelot and Brémond, 1715-1726. A fine suite of charts, exquisitely painted by a contemporary artist , probably issued in this form by the publishers, though the number of charts is more usually 16 rather than 14. Although very largely devoted to the Mediterranean, the first plate is a ‘Nouvelle carte des côtes de l’ocean contenant les côtes de Portugal et Barbarie … et les Isles de Canaries’. For similar untitled atlas collections in the BL, see Shirley BL M.MICH-1a-1d. Isaac Heard early owner of this atlas, volunteered for the Navy at the age of 15. His first ship sailed the Mediterranean, where he developed an interest in classical antiquities. In 1759 he changed careers to become a Herald, eventually rising to the highest position, Garter Principal King of Arms in 1784, in which role he helped plan the funeral of Horatio Nelson. Palau 168324. Folio (491 x 354mm). Untitled suite of 14 hand-coloured engraved charts , some signed by P. Starckman, one folding, the rest double-page (charts of the coasts of Spain and Barbary and of Sardinia lightly browned, some fainter browning and occasional soiling elsewhere, folding map strengthened along back). Contemporary calf, covers with small gilt fleur-de-lys at corners, plain spine with raised bands (rubbed and bumped, some old repairs). Provenance: Isaac Heard of the College of Arms, London 1760 (1730-1822, Garter King of Arms; inscription on front flyleaf).
