Military Tarock of Emperor Franz Josef, Deck I, 1854, Vienna, Josef Glanz, 54 of 54 cards, stencil-colored steel engravings, ace of hearts contains Austrian monarchic tax stamp, 10 kreuzer (valid 1850-1857), duty office number 61 for Vienna, and the name GLANZ JOSEPH WIEN 1854. Designed by J. Surch as evidenced at lower left of trump XV. Trumps are full-length figures, double-ended Roman numbers, and captions identify officers or describe military scenes. This is the first version of four Military Tarock decks featuring Emperor Franz Josef I at different periods in his life. In this deck trump II shows the emperor clean shaven, III The return home of a brave soldier, IIII Old acquaintances, V General Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden, and "FJ1" on saddle pad, VI General Major Ludwig Ritter von Benedek, VII Count Banus Josef Jellacic, VIII An outpost in Italy during the winter of 1848, IX An outpost in Hungary during the winter of 1849, X An heroic death in battle, XI Bivouac, XII A faithful companion is buried, XIII A Serreshaner officer, XIV Hooray, it's wartime, XV Quartermaster General Baron Julius Jakob von Haynau, XVI A dying soldier, XVII Field Marshall D'Aspre decorated on the battlefield of the brave, XVIII Lieutenant Field Marshall Count Franz Joseph von Schlick, XIX A Russian outpost in Hungary, XX Field Marshall Count Johann Joseph Radetsky, and XXI A Cossack. Courts are double-ended and named theatrical, royalty or prominent figures in colorful costume, French suits, no indices, square corners. Backs are a geometrical pattern of dots and asterisks in dark greenish brown. Size 4 in. (10.5 cm.) high, 2 1/8 in. (5.5 cm.) wide. Slightly worn. Kaplan II, 453.
