MILLER, William. Biographical Sketches of British Characters recently deceased: commencing with the accession of George the Fourth... London: J.Moyes for Henry Colburn, Colnaghi, Son & Co. and J.A.Molteno, 1826. 2 volumes, large 2° (650 x 475mm.). 106 portraits only, comprising: 42 mezzotints (one folding, 34 mounted to size, 16 shaved into plate area, two loosely inserted and spotted), 6 lithographs (all mounted to size, 2 on india paper) and 58 engravings (56 mounted to size, one shaved into plate area, one proof engraving of Lord Byron loosely inserted), (two plates spotted, many letterpress descriptions without a corresponding plate, 42 letterpress descriptions faced by blank leaves with central sections (?and plates) removed). Contemporary half morocco gilt (scuffed, rubbed); sold as a collection of plates not subject to return. LIMITED TO 25 COPIES ON COLUMBIER PAPER. Also issued in two quarto volumes for one guinea, this large paper issue cost (10 and was designed to accomodate the largest of the portraits without folding. The plates include portraits of the Nobility, Bishops, scientists, politicians, actors and artists. Many of the mezzotints are rare and fine impressions, some before letters or in early states; they include the Earl of Harewood, Thomas Knight, Edward Jenner, Joseph Nollekins, David Riccardo, Richard Earlom George Dance Countess of Oxford, Mrs Hartley, Lord Nelson, Lord Howe and the Duchess of Newcastle. The collection also includes an interesting lithograph by Hullmandel of Rheo-Rheo, Prime Minister of the Sandwich Islands. Lowndes p.1551. (2)
