M.C. London Gazette 11 December 1916. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He worked continuously for 18 hours in No Man’s Land, caring for and carrying the wounded under heavy fire. He displayed great courage and determination throughout.’ Bar to M.C. London Gazette 26 September 1917; citation 9 January 1918. ‘He was untiring in his efforts in keeping up the spirits of the men under very difficult conditions. His personal example largely contributed to the fostering of the spirit which enabled the Battalion to do so well in spite of considerable casualties. During and after the attack he attended to the wounded quite regardless of danger. He cheered up all he came across, and by his energy and fearlessness set a valuable example to all.’ Mervyn Saxelbye Evers was born on 8 September 1887. Attending Clare College, Cambridge he gained a B.A. in 1909 and M.A. in 1918. Trained for the church at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford 1912. Ordained a Deacon in 1912 and Priest in 1914. Curate of St Matthew, Hull, 1912-14; Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 1914-19, being awarded the M.C. and Bar. Curate of All Saints, Northampton, 1919-20; then Priest at a Church Missionary Society Boy’s School, 1920-23. Then appointed Curate of West Ham, 1923-24 and Chaplain at Lahore, 1924; Peshawar, 1924-32, Rawalpindi, 1932-33; Quetta, 1933-36; Rawalpindi, 1936-37, Waziristan, 1937-38, Lahore, 1938, Ambala, 1938-40, Simla, from 1940. Served as Officiating Archdeacon of Lahore, 1938-40 and Archdeacon, 1940-44. He was then appointed Vicar of St. James, Boroughbridge in the Diocese of Ripon from 1944. With some copied research.
