watercolor on ivory. A fine bust-length portrait of a distinguished gentleman identified as a member of the Kutz or Cutz family, probably of Pennsylvania. Late 18th century, in an old, possibly original, gold locket mounted in a later gilt frame; 1.5" x 1.25" (w/o frame), 5" x 4" (w/frame). An inked note on verso reads, Miniature by James Peale of a member of the Cutz or Kutz family. The gold locket was placed in this frame (which my father W.H.B. Etchison got as a boy in Sunday school) by me. M.L.E.. M.L.E. refers to Marshall Etchison, a prominent collector in Frederick, Maryland in the middle of the 20th century. James Peale Sr. (1749-1831), born in Chestertown, Maryland the younger brother of Charles Wilson Peale. He was raised in Annapolis and in 1769, became his brother's assistant. He served in the Maryland regiment during the American Revolution and executed 2 full-length portraits of George Washington at Yorktown. After the war, he settled in Philadelphia and painted portraits and still lifes, and helped his brother with his natural history museum. James Peale has been called "One of the country's finest miniature painters." See American Miniatures, Metropolitan Museum of Art 1730-1850, pp. 96-97, and American Portrait Miniatures in the Manney Collection, pp. 167-174. Condition:Small scratch; VG.
