MIRACLE OF THE BOY WHO OFFERED HIS BREAD TO THE CHRIST CHILD, miniature by Lieven van Lathem
MIRACLE OF THE BOY WHO OFFERED HIS BREAD TO THE CHRIST CHILD, miniature by Lieven van Lathem 132 x 184 mm. Verso with 13 lines corresponding to de Laborde, p.211; from the first folio missing after f.100 in BnF ms fr. 9199 (small losses lower right to mullion and hat of man to right, slight marking to sky at left). A bishop had given many cathedral benefices to children of his friends and relatives so that services were badly performed by little clerics 'who scarcely knew how to wipe their noses', à peines sceuent ilz leurs nez mouchier . As seen in the centre midground, one of them found an old statue of the Virgin and Child, put in a corner because it was blackened and had lost its paint, and urged the Christ Child to share his bread or cake. Our Lady asked Christ what he would give in return and the wooden Child spoke, telling the little boy to go home and go to bed and tell his mother that in three days he would die and eat the fruits of paradise. This is seen on the right, where his mother and some of the people who have flocked to his bedside on hearing of the miracle listen to his words. On the left, he is buried with many mourners in attendance. The text on the verso laments bad appointments to benefices, which keep out worthy candidates, and describes the statue of the Virgin.
