MITCHELL, Margaret. Four typed letters signed ("Margaret" or "M") to Hershel Brickell, Atlanta, 16 July, 24 September, 31 October 1938 and 27 June 1939. Together 9 pages, small folio, single-spaced, on her stationery, the first three with name embossed in blue, the last in black, the first and last with holograph postscripts, four stamped, addressed envelopes . 16 July 1938: principally concerned with Brickell's recent writing on her: "I think you are a devil. I am referring to your recognition of me in the recent book on the South which you mentioned in your last letter. I am back on my hind legs pawing the air, wondering how many other people will recognize me if you did... I do my best to be polite to the opinions of Leftwingers and to be as tolerant as possible, for I expect tolerance of my own opinions. However, occasions arose when, instead of being the retiring Sothern gentlewoman, I made such crude remarks as 'applesauce.'" 24 September 1938: opening with an account of the recent hurricane which had hit and discussing a possible lecture tour by Brickell: "It seems like a grand idea to me, and getting a saddle horse out of it is enough to justify the miseries of lecturing..." 31 October 1938: opening with comments about her father's poor health which she'd discussed in the postscript to the previous letter: "The last week has been a nightmare such as one has during malaria or ber-beri or scurvy... To complicate matters, Mrs. Ogden Reid, of the Herald-Tribune, announced blatantly in New York that I had endorsed Katherine Hepburn for the role of Scarlett. I had done no such thing..." 27 June 1939: mentions her trip North to Smith College and expresses concern over Brickell's bad back, which she suspects is a "disk lesion." On personal matters, she notes "We are now wrestling through some more foreign contracts and arranging to bust a lawsuit in the face of an unsuspecting infringer of my dramatic rights..." (4)
