Mohammed Hoessein Enas (Malaysian 1924-1995) Portrait of a young girl seated in a blue dress Signed and dated 65 Oil on canvas 101 x 77cm A largely self-taught artist, Enas approaches portraiture influenced by the European academic style - something that was pioneering for his time. Art in Malaysia has traditionally been created for the elite, and portraits in particular were reserved for those at the highest levels of society, most notably royalty, and also deities. Enas painted portraits of the new, modern idols such as Muhammad Ali, and humble local characters such as Portrait of a man in an orange turban, and was even bestowed the title of Royal Portrait Painter in 1990. His empathetic palette and style resonated with his contemporaries and captured the changing times, from settling in Malaya in 1956, when he fronted the Malaysian Arts Council, to the creation of Malaysia in the 1960s, until his death in 1995.
