MORTIER, Pieter (1661-1711). Carte Particuliere des Costes de Cap du Bone Esperance. Amsterdam: [1700]. Superb sea chart of the Cape of Good Hope, finely hand-coloured and heightened in gold. The coastline stretches from today's Cape Town eastwards, perhaps as far as today's Port Elizabeth and Algoa Bay, via Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. One inset shows a bird's-eye view of the Bay with Table Mountain, while the other is a plan of Cape Town with a key indicating the main buildings, including the mill and Hottentots' homes, as well as the garden laid out by the Dutch East India Company to provision their ships rounding Africa. Normally found folded in the Atlas Suite de Neptune François , this exceptional example is unfolded. Norwich 266; Tooley South Africa 213. Engraved map on 2 joined sheets , coloured by a contemporary hand and heightened in gold , verso blank, 2 inset maps, 2 compass roses with intersecting rhumb lines, 570 x 800mm (plate mark), 629 x 960 (sheet).
