Cambridge [Mass.]: Printed by S. G[reen]. and M. J[ohnson]. for John Usher of Boston 1669. Small 4to, 176 x 139mm. (6 15/16 x 5 7/16in.), eighteenth-century English mottled calf, double gilt fillet borders, spine in six compartments, red morocco label, marbled pastedowns and edges, covers rubbed and nearly all gilt lost from spine, upper joint cracked but sound, dark green morocco gilt pull-off case by Riviere, some lower outer portions with old dampstain, some leaves browned. FIRST EDITION. Evans 144; Wing M 2827; Sabin 51012; Church 606; Howes M851. AN ATTRACTIVE COPY --[L., S.]. A Letter from a Gentleman of the Lord Ambassador Howard's Retinue, To his Friend in London: Dated at Fez, Nov. 1. 1669. Wherein he gives a full Relation of the most Remarkable Passages in their Voyage thither, and of the present state of the Countries under the Power of Taffaletta, Emperour of Morocco; With a brief account of the Merchandizing Commodities of Africa; As also, The Manners and Customs of the People there. Bound following the preceding work, lacks A1, small hole in B2 catching three words. Wing L 61. New Englands Memoriall "is one of the class commonly referred to as 'the cornerstones' of early New England history"--Church Catalogue. "Morton's work is the first strictly historical work printed in America; and is one of the earliest printed books recording the origin of Plymouth colony. The voyage of the Mayflower and the landing and first settlement of the Pilgrims are given in detail. Morton found his main sources in the extensive historical manuscripts left by his uncle William Bradford "--Streeter sale II, 631 Provenance : Sir Richard Newdigate, second baronet of Harefield and Arbury, bookplate on verso of title of first work; Sir Roger Newdigate (1719-1806), fifth baronet, bookplate on pastedown; thence by descent to Sir Francis Newdigate-Newdegate with the Arbury Hall book label (sale, Sotheby's, 23 January 1920, lot 238); J.C. McCoy, booklabel.
