Engraved title (with imprint line as above), engraved headpiece to Introduction (with imprint line dated 23 April 1812), engraved sectional title (part II, 'Description of the Palace of the Alhambra', following pl. 8), and 98 numbered plates after Murphy including bis plate 8, 2 plates double-page. (Light spotting to margins of last few plates.) Contemporary russia by Ph. Selenka, Wiesbaden, with his ticket, covers panelled in gilt and blind in Moresco style, gilt spine and turn-ins, gilt edges (light scuff marks to lower cover). Cicognara 2537; Palau 186309.10. EARLY ISSUE of Murphy's Arabian Antiquities with superb impressions of the plates. The work was published serially between July 1815 and mid-1816, with the complete volume offered for sale later that year. Cadell and Davies continued to publish the work for some years, reprinting the plates and reissuing the letterpress. On the dissolution of their partnership (1820), the matrices were acquired by H.G. Bohn who afterwards added four plates to the series. Murphy's History was intended as an 'introduction' to the larger plate volume. Its first part, by John Shakespear, provided a political history and an account of the Umayyad dynasty, together with a description of Cordoba. Thomas Hartwell-Horne contributed the second part. Dealing predominantly with the sciences and the arts, it distinguished between art found in the Middle East and the art of Moorish Spain. BOTH FINE COPIES. (2)
