Eximeno was a Jesuit and professor of mathematics and of music at the military academy of Segovia. On the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain, he settled in Rome, so that all his major works were first published in Italian. (The Spanish translation of Dell' origine did not appear until 1796.) In this work, he proposed to abolish the strict laws of counterpoint and harmony, and instead apply the rules of prosody to composition. In the Dubbio , he attacked the Bolognese composer and theorist Giovanni Battista Martini, who believed that the theory of music should have a scientific foundation, based on a study of mathematics.
