“Savage Arms Corp” marked “Cal .30 MODEL 0F 1917” ground gun includes Savage Arms Corporation serial number on right side of receiver as well as “U.S. NO. 1699” marked forward of pan magazine shaft. Rear sight marked for “.30-U.S.” ammunition. Savage patent dates on rear buttplate. 1 47-round original .30-06 pan magazine is included, and 1 original Savage Arms Corporation marked loading tool is included with this lot. Electronic NFA registry indicates “LEWIS MACHINE GUN” as the manufacturer. Gun is registered under its U.S. number. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original black enamel finish on the receiver and action cover with lustrous blue finish forward of the receiver. There is some loss of finish to a grey patina right at the high edges with some scattered areas of pinprick spots of corrosion. Bipod is extremely fine starting to turn a grey patina. Metal hardware of wood buttstock consistent with the receiver. Buttplate shows some thinning of finish to a grey patina. Wood is extremely fine with some light dings and handling marks. Pan magazine and loading tool also extremely fine original blue finish. Bore is near excellent, shiny, and bright. Bolt exhibits Navy Anchor and is near excellent. Mechanics are crisp and smooth. This is a full-auto only machine gun. The preferred model light machine gun of World War I in a popular caliber. Reliable, portable, and relatively light in comparison to the water-cooled guns then employed. This is one of the best condition .30-06 Lewis machine guns to come through this cataloger’s hands and will not disappoint the buyer.
