NAPOLEON I ( Emperor of France , 1804-1821). Letter signed ('Napoleon') to Cardinal Fesch, Saint Cloud, 'Le quatre Brumaire an 13' [26 October 1804], in French , announcing the date of his coronation, 'Nous avons designé le onzième jour du mois de frimaire prochain pour la cérémonie de notre Sacre et de notre couronnement', and summoning the Cardinal to attend it, countersigned by Hugues Maret (Duke of Bassano) as Secretary of State, ½ page written on one leaf, 305 x 210mm., annotated in a later handwriting in the blank lower portion of the leaf, 'This was given to me today at Farnborough Hill by the Empress Eugenie. The Duke of Bassano who was present said the second signature was his father's. 22 d March 1886' (conjugate leaf cut away) . Cardinal Fesch, half-brother of Napoleon's mother, Letizia Bonaparte, arranged for the consecration of Napoleon as Emperor by the Pope. A published decree of the same date as the letter contains instructions for the issuing of invitations to the coronation, which was held on 1 December 1804.
