However, HMS Terror became stuck in the ice near Frozen Strait, suffering considerable structural damage, and eventually limping back to Ireland. Although failing in his main aim, Back was able to make many detailed observations on conditions and surroundings, including ice floes, the terrain of Southampton Island, trading with Baffin Island Eskimos, the weather and privations endured.
