Half-titles. Engraved additional titles with nature-printed vignettes printed in green, 122 nature-printed plates by Bradbury. (Most plates lightly spotted, heavier spotting to about six plates.) Contemporary light brown half calf, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, brown morocco lettering-pieces in the second, small oval onlays bearing the volume numbers in the third compartment. FIRST OCTAVO EDITION of Henry Bradbury's best known work. Fischer 92; Nissen 1401 (incorrect title); Stafleu & Cowan III, 6277. William Grosart JOHNSTONE (d.c. 1860) and Alexander CROALL (1809-1885). The Nature-Printed British Sea-Weeds... Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury . London: Bradbury & Evans, 1859-1860. 4 volumes, 8° (242 x 157mm). Half-titles, 26pp. publishers' advertisements. 1 uncoloured lithograph, 1 hand-coloured lithograph and 220 nature-printed plates. (Occasional spotting, margins of plate 28 torn, two plates loosely inserted, plates 176-181 with light dampstaining to inner margin, plate 182 with heavier dampstaining to inner margin.) Original green cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (neatly recased, modern endpapers). Provenance : William Laurence Bradbury (armorial bookplates removed from original endpapers and loosely inserted). Engraved title, 11 plates, 1 folding and nature-printed by James Hardie, 10 engraved after Hopkirk, folding. (Repaired tear to the folding engraved plate, some spotting.) Original boards (rebacked, later paper label, small tear to backstrip). Provenance : Arpad Plesch (book label, sale Sotheby's 17 November 1975, lot 364, sold £70 to Kew Books).
