NEAR EASTERN SUMERIAN IVORY STATUETTE 2500-2000 BC A standing human figure in ivory, wearing a flounced robe, the hands holding a jar over the chest, the feet showing at the front with a pillow support making up the rest of the base. 4 grams, 31 mm (1 1/4"). Fine condition. Extremely rare. Head missing. Provenance From an important collection of Classical and Near Eastern objects formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s; the property of a London gentleman, cat. no.26430/14. Literature Accompanied by an old scholarly note, hand written and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993. Footnotes This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz.
