Während des Goldenen Zeitalters war die Steuerbelastung in den Niederlanden bedeutend höher als in den angrenzenden Ländern. Statthalter wie Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien (1584 - 1647) waren als oberste Staatsbeamte der einzelnen Provinzen auch für die Eintreibung dieser enorm hohen Steuern zuständig.

During the Golden Age, the tax burden in the Netherlands was significantly higher than in the neighbouring countries. Stadtholders such as Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584 - 1647), were as the chief civil servants of the individual provinces also responsible for collecting these enormously high taxes.
