The maps were introduced as exhibits and each bears an exhibit tag. Two maps are official tracings of original diseños (Rancho Las Positas and Rancho Santa Rita) ; one an official tracing of the initiatory survey for Rancho Las Positas; one an official tracing of the map of route of the Western Pacific RR from San Jose to Sacramento; two original manuscript maps each showing the three official surveys of Rancho Las Positas; and the others of smaller particular areas. Provenance: California Book Auction, 2/10/89 Itemized description: Nine manuscript maps related to a legal Case involving lands in Livermore Valley, California: U.S. vs. Curtner, U.S. Circuit Court, District of California, 1887. Maps were introduced as exhibits and each has the exhibit tag affixed. l) Diseno on tracing cloth, 83"xl4", of Rancho Las Positas of Jose Noriega and Robert Livermore. Tracing of diseno is attached to legal form attesting that tracing is a "true, full and Complete Copy of the original" diseno and identifies location of the original. Signed by R.P.C. Hammond, U.S. S.G., Cal., 12/30/1887 with seal of office. 2) Diseno on tracing cloth, 84"x14", of Rancho Santa Rita of Jose Delores Pacheco (borders on West of Rancho Las Positas). Tracing of diseno is attached to legal form attesting that diseno is a "true, full and complete copy of the original" diseno and identifies location of the original. Signed by R.P.C. Hammond, U.S. S.G., Cal.,8/17/1886, with seal of office. 3) Manuscript map on tracing cloth, 34"x35". Tracing is "Map of the Iniatory Survey of the Rancho Las Positas claimed by Robert Livermore and confirmed by the Board of Land Commissioners containing 20 847 7/10 acres Surveyed by Wm..J. Lewis Dep Surv. under instruction from the United States Surveyor General Scale 20 miles to the inch". Stated on map that this is "a full, true and complete copy of the original——dated April 5th, 1854" and signed by W.H. Brown, U.S. S.G., Cal., 1883, with seal of Office. 4) Manuscript map on heavy but finely wove linen, 25 1/8"x22 5/8" (edged with blue ribbon), of the several official surveys of Rancho Las Positas: 1) Iniatory Survey, May, 1854; 2) Survey of Oct. 1865; 3) survey upon which patent was granted, March, 1869. Each survey is distinguished by outline color. Signed by R.P.C. Hammond, U.S. S.G., Cal., 12/28/1887, with the seal of office. 5) Manuscript map on tracing cloth, 29¼"x 26¾", titled "Exhibit Hopkins". This shows the three surveys made for the Rancho Las Positas, and some surrounding ranchos. Each survey is distinguished by outline color, and the " land in litigation marked blue". Filed as an exhibit, 7/26/1887. 6) Manuscript map on tracing cloth, 23½"x17½", of Township No.3 South, Range No.3 East, Mount Diablo Meridian. (Borders in part on south side of Rancho Las Positas). Tracing of the drawing of original survey, "strictly conformable to the field notes——12/18/1865". Tracing is certified to be a "full, true and complete copy of the original map" and signed by R.P.C. Hammond, U.S. S.G., Cal., 2/3/1887, with the seal of Office. 7) Manuscript map on tracing cloth, 26"x18½", of Township No.3 South, Range No.3 East, Mount Diablo Meridian. (Borders in part on south side of Rancho Las Positas). Tracing of the drawing of original survey "strictly conformable to the field notes——12/24/1862". Tracing is certified to be a "full, true and complete copy of the original map" and signed by R.P.C. Hammond, U.S. S.G., Cal., 6/9/1886, with the seal Of Office.
