Photographs: 7.1x9.6 cm (2¾x3¾"), leaves: 11.8x16.2 cm (4¾x6½"), blue cloth stamped in gilt. All photographs captioned in mss. on mount. A fascinating photograph album documenting the travels of a father and son as they make their way by boat ("The Fram", no doubt after Nansen's ship) from Finland through the rural frontier lands of Russia. Images include shooting rapids, lodging, trading with local Russians, portaging their boat through a Russian forest; further images depict a barefoot Russian sportsman and early Russian frontier homes. The journey culminates in a visit with a cheerful, Rasputin-looking fellow who is invested with higher office by the caption—which dubs him "The Russian Pope". This album offers a rare glimpse of Russian frontier life during the late 19th century.
