number 57 of 150 de luxe copies on handmade paper and signed by the author, with further presentation inscription from Ellen Terry on half-title, photogravure frontispiece portrait by Edward Steichen 20 plates, each tipped to thicker brown leaf with captioned tissue guard, marginal offsetting from brown leaves, light spotting to frontispiece, half-title, last f. and endpapers somewhat browned, original cream cloth, gilt, yapp fore-edges, g.e., spine slightly dulled, minor creasing to fore-edges, [F & R A13(a)], small 4to, 1911. *** An attractive copy of the work originally intended as a re-issue of The Art of the Theatre of 1905 with additional material, but which became an entirely different work. With the portrait and four other plates not included in the ordinary edition. "It was translated into French, Russian, and Japanese, and made his theories known throughout the world. No other book had such an impact on contemporary theatre - or such far-reaching effects on the theatre of years to come ." Edward Craig. Gordon Craig: The Story of His Life p.261. The inscription from the actress Ellen Terry Gordon Craig's mother, simply reads 'Presented by Ellen Terry = 1919 ='. This copy is accompanied by several ephemeral items relating to Terry, including an Ellen Terry Memorial fund-raising prospectus addressed to Eric Forbes-Robertson (brother of Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson , a printed card for the Memorial Service (some soiling and annotations), newspaper clippings and typescript tributes to the actor William Terris, by Norman Forbes (brother of Eric & Johnston). Eric and Johnston Forbes-Robertson were part of a family at the heart of the arts in Britain at the turn of the century, Eric an artist who exhibited in Paris with the likes of Robert Bevan, Harold Gilman John Nash and McKnight Kauffer. Under the stage name John Kelt he played 'Noodler' in the first production of Barrie's Peter Pan in 1904. Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson was a successful theatre manager and considered one of the finest actors of his time.
