Paton. 1870. single volume, first Paton edition, large 8vo, (247 x 195mm), contemporary straight-grain red morocco, gilt, bound by Ramage of London, royal arms of Scotland to upper cover, all edges gilt, gilt doublures, complete with illustrations throughout; with a loosely inserted note from Howard Nixon on British Museum headed notepaper and original envelope with manuscript inscription dated 1873. Aytoun's best known and culturally important piece of work appearing for the first time with illustrations by Sir Joseph Noel Paton and Waller H. Paton. Provenance: Howard Nixon, a librarian and historian of bookbinding, offers a brief history of bookbinders, Ramage of London, and stated this copy, bound in the special publisher's binding with the text of Aytoun's poems, appeared in a very similar binding held in the Museum's collection.
