Wheelock Collection, Prestel, 18 mai 2007, pl. 65 Ce très beau masque-planche complexe évolue dans le groupe des masques Bwa appelé bayiri. Les motifs très graphiques sont le symbole de lois morales et éthiques tandis que les crochets représentant des becs d'oiseaux et les trois personnages au sommet sont des représentations d'esprits. Un regard attentif à la base de la planche permet de voir un quadrupède, probablement une hyène, traversant la structure du masque. L'ensemble est orné d'une belle structure géométrique composée de cercles concentriques et de lignes soulignée par une palette de pigments noirs, rouges, blancs. Les usures et les oxydations du bois traduisent la très belle ancienneté de ce masque. Wheelock Collection, Prestel, 18 may 2007, pl. 65 This beautiful and complex plank-mask is part of the group of Bwa masks known as the bayiri. The highly graphic patterns symbolize moral and ethical laws, while the hooks representing birds' beaks and the three figures at the top are evocations of spirits. A closer look at the base of the plank shows a quadruped, probably a hyena, crossing the mask structure. The whole mask is decorated with a fine geometric design made up of concentric circles and lines highlighted by a range of black, red and white pigments. The wear and oxidation to the wood reflect the mask's great age.
