Il provient de la région Risiam dans le nord, et a sûrement été sculpté par nyonyosé, qui utilise ce type de masques plats pour lesquels les Mossi sont célèbres. La tête et le bec de l'oiseau attachés sur la planche ne sont pas inhabituels, mais la triple planche et la forme du visage sont très rares. Je n'ai jamais vu de tel masque au Burkina Faso, mais les motifs utilisés sont une preuve suffisante qu'il est ancien et authentique. Les motifs peints sur les planches sont nombreux et exécutés avec finesse, et l'objet dans son ensemble est remarquable. Christopher Roy Land of the Flying Masks, p. 104 Ce masque très rare de style est monoxyle à l'exception de la planche centrale verticale avec le bec d'oiseau qui a été conçue séparément. La planche oblique de droite, pendant de l'autre, a été cassée et restaurée sur place avec des ligatures de cuir. L'oiseau sur la planche centrale semble tenir dans son bec une charge magique ou la représentation d'un esprit. La partie basse du masque d'une grande abstraction, est conçue comme un ‘heaume de chevalier'. Tout le masque montre un long usage avec différents types de patine sur le haut des surfaces usées et polies à la couleur miel et sur la face du masque une alternance de patine granuleuse et lisse de couleur marron. It is from the Risiam area in the north, and was surely carved by nyonyosé, who use plank masks of the type for which the Mossi are best known. The bird's head and beak attached to the plank are not unusual, but the triple plank and the shape of the face are very unusual indeed. I have never seen anything like this in Burkina Faso, but the patterns of use are ample evidence that it is old and authentic. The painted patterns on the planks are fine and numerous, and the object as a whole is quite remarkable.” Christopher Roy Land of the Flying Masks, p. 104 This stylistically rare mask is carved out of a single piece of wood with the exception of the central vertical board with the bird's beak, which was made separately. The slanting board on the right, the twin of the other board, was broken and restored with leather ties. The bird on the central board seems to be holding a magic load or the representation of a spirit in its beak. The lower part of the mask is highly abstract and designed like a "great helm". The whole mask shows signs of extensive use with different patinas on the handled, polished and honey-coloured surfaces, and on the face of the mask, with its alternating granular and smooth brown patinas.
