Np, 1871-1874. Complete set of 50 stereoviews of the Wheeler Expedition, each arched top albumen prints on the original yellow card mounts (each 4x7 inches, 100x180 mm). Each image numbered and captioned on verso. Modern morocco-backed cloth clamshell box. Condition: Minor fading and edge wear to the stereoviews. rare set of stereoviews depicting the 1871-74 wheeler expedition to the grand canyon. Led by Captain George M. Wheeler, this important expedition was undertaken to conduct a large-scale government topographical and geological survey of the region west of the 100th meridian - i.e. Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Idaho. These 50 stereoview photographs, taken by expedition photographers Timothy O'Sullivan (42) and William Bell (8), depict stunning western views, as well as pueblos, villages and members of the Zuni, Mojave, Navajo, Apache, and Ute tribes of the region. Distributed in 1875 as a means to raise public awareness of the survey, sets are rarely found complete. See James D. Horan, Timothy O'Sullivan America's Forgotten Photographer (New York, 1966).
