Beschreibung:

Manuscript daybooks, Ohio and Texas, 1829-1876, small 4to, 8 volumes, some browning and soiling, wear to bindings, still generally very good. Manuscript journals and account books covering nearly 50 years in a carpenter family. James Preston was a Connecticut-born carpenter/joiner who moved to Claridon, Ohio as a young man and kept these journals from 1829-1860. His son Reuben continued in his father's trade but moved first to Austin, Texas and then Merrelltown, Texas. The senior Preston's daybooks are quite business-like, but Reuben's include colorful comments such as "I celebrated my birth day by getting drunk at Sam Bloomer's Still House." He also comments on building a cotton gin house but prefers "knocking about town among the sisters and to the grog shops." 3 of the daybooks belonged to James Preston 1 to Reuben Preston, the other four refer to Reuben's daughter Anna and her husband and father-in-law, David and Ebeneezer Cannon.
