Oil on canvas, framed; the lower left signed Chen Yanning both in Chinese and in English. Dimensions 48 x 72in (122 x 183cm) Provenance: originally sold at Christie's Hong Kong for HK$299,000 on November 3, 1997 Note: Born in Guangzhou, Chen Yanning graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1965. In 1970, he joined the Guangdong Academy of Fine Arts as a professional artist, where he remained until 1986. During that period, he received many awards from various national exhibitions in China. In 1982, one of his paintings was selected in Salon de Printemps in Paris. In 1985, the Australian government invited him to visit western Australia for cultural exchange. The following year he visited the Great Britain and emigrated to the United States. In 1987, his works were shown in Contmporary Oil Paintings from the People's Republic of China at the Harkness House in New York. In 1987 and 1989, Hefner Galleries held successful solo exhibitions for him. He was employed as an instructor in the Fine Art department of Oklahoma City University in 1988. He received a national prize in a portraiture competition held by the Federation of British Artists in 1991. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery and the Museum of History in China, as well as the West Australian National Gallery and many private collections in the United States, Singapore, Japan and Europe.
