OLIVA, Joan] (fl. 1570-1614). Portolan chart of the Mediterranean. [Marseilles: c.1600]. Illuminated manuscript portolan chart on vellum, heightened in gold, 520 x 710mm. The chart extending from the eastern coast of Spain and Algeria to the Levant, and from the North African littoral to the Alps and the Black Sea, the coastlines drawn in brown, blue and green with rivers in blue, prolific coastal names in red and black, interior lands decorated with symbolised mountain features. The hill of Calvary marked by three crosses, Mount Sinai with a monastery, Africa decorated with a lion, goat, horse, elephant and two camels, the seas filled with rhumb-lines around a central rhumb-point. The chart is decorated with fourteen elaborate windroses mostly placed in central Europe, and North Africa, three decorative scale bars, the continents Europe, Asia and Africa lettered in banners. The whole chart decorated with rhumb-lines and set within a gilded border, the left margin with latitudinal graticule. A fine Mediterranean portolan in Marjorcan style, carefully executed and figured, profusely decorated with gold and silver to windroses, scales and mountains.
