Beschreibung:

Merycoidodon culbertsoni Oligocene Brule Formation, White River Formation, South Dakota This strange early mammal is from an extinct group of ruminants known as Oreodonts, found only in North America, which displayed large, pig-like canine teeth and pits in front of the eyes similar to those of a modern deer. Oreodonts are Artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates.) While Merycoidodon skulls are found regularly, nearly complete skeletons are very rare. This excellent specimen consists of an excellent skull, two nearly complete rear legs with several disarticulated claws, an 18-inch-long body and vertebrae with several rib bones. This spectacular specimen is from one individual and has been prepared in its death position, as it was when the individual expired over 30 million years ago. Skull measures 8in; Legs measure 18in; Body measures 18in
