Rare early image of a young Horton Smith (perhaps 17 or 18 years old), inscribed and signed by him in black fountain pen: “To Mitch, Sincerely, Horton Smith,” on an original George S. Pietzcker photograph (with his embossed studio stamp on the bottom margin), expertly framed. Legendary golfer Horton Smith (1908–1963) won the very first and the third U.S. Masters Tournament in 1934 and 1936 (held annually at Augusta National Golf Club). He played in that major every year until his death in 1963. The PGA Tour was founded in 1934, and Smith was one of the leading players during those early years, topping the money list in 1936. He accumulated 32 total PGA Tour titles, the last of them in 1941. George S. Pietzcker (1885-1971), who by 1920, was the official USGA photographer with the largest collection of golf photos in the United States. His prints continue to stand up to the rigors of time, capturing an important slice of golf history by one of the great photographers of his era. Recently, Rand Jerris, director of the USGA Museum and Archives, oversaw the compilation of Pietzcker’s golf photographs used in a fascinating photo book: Golf’s Golden Age: Robert T.
