Amsterdam: Gerardum Tielenburg, 1764. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (393 x 248mm). Letterpress prize leaf with engraved vignette tipped-in at first half-title, engraved vignette on titles and dedication, engraved portrait frontispiece facing A1, 55 full-page engravings, of which 2 folding and 14 double-page. (Occasional light scattered foxing, a very few pages browned, title lightly soiled and with date of publication transcribed in ink.) Contemporary vellum, covers gilt with the arms of the city of Amsterdam within two frames of tools including the city shield, spine in compartments each with the city shield blocked in gilt (ties lacking, upper joint starting, vellum soiled). Provenance: inscription, dated 1829, deleted from prize leaf. FIRST EDITION, IN A PRIZE BINDING, of this early survey of the antiquities of classical Sicily, including architectural remains, numismatics and epigraphy. The work was bound with the arms of the city of Amsterdam as a prize for achievement at the Amsterdam Gymnasium. Brunet IV, 247 ['ouvrage fort estimé'].
