Beschreibung:

P. S. Krøyer (b. Stavanger 1851, d. Skagen 1909) Interior with fishermen in an inn. Signed and dated S. Krøyer Skagen 1886. Charcoal on paper. Visible size 45×60 cm. Michael Ancher felt he had the exclusive right to paint the local fishermen, therefore he was upset, when P.S. Krøyer as early as in 1882 on his first visit to Skagen also painted the local fishermen. Krøyer came on a rainy day, where it was impossible to paint in the open air, so instead he went to Brøndum's grocery and painted: “I købmandens bod, når der ikke fiskes” (In the grocery store, when there is no fishing). Ancher was indignant and felt that Krøyer had gone too far by poaching on his preserves by painting in his brother-in-law's grocery. In a letter from November 1882 Ancher writes to Krøyer that he has found a goldmine of motifs, all of which he intends to paint (in Danish): "but then you come along, so skilled. You are using all the same motifs: you paint from the shop with my parents-in-law. You could not be much closer, even if I got the feeling of becoming a refugee up here, trampled a bit on the corns. Is it so strange? It feels like an attack on one’s regular spot. It is reminiscent of the rich man who owned many sheep but slaughtered the poor man’s only lamb (Elisabeth Fabritius, “Anna og Michael Ancher. Breve og fotografier”, 2018 vol I p. 511, letter no. 381 dated d. 5. 11 1882).
