NOTE: By a stroke of sheer luck, friend of Picasso and noted Irish photographer Edward Quinn happened to be visiting the Madoura studio the day "Plat picador et toreador" was being hand-painted by Picasso, with the date boldly noted on the front (23.3.53; March 23, 1953). Quinn's eleven photos of the event capture the artist deftly adding the black linear elements to the outer rim, having already painted the bullfighting scene at center, and yet to address the equally decorated and signed underside. This work initially sold through Picasso's Parisian dealer, Galerie Louise Leiris, to the wife of the President of the Museum of Modern Art, Mrs. William A. M. Burden. Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973).
