PALEMONIO, Giovanni Giacomo. L'Ornamento della oratione . Venice: Giovanni Pietro Brigonci, 1663. [ Bound with :] Panegirici in prosa, et in versi. Venice: G.P.Brigonci, 1663. 2 works in one volume, 32° (80 x 54mm). CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO GILT BY GREGORIO ANDREOLI FOR CAMILLO ROSPIGLIOSI, covers with the centrally-placed coronetted arms of Rospigliosi impaled with those of his wife, Lucrezia Cellesi, within outer roll-tooled border and arabesque cornerpieces, flat spine tooled in gilt with small tools, marbled paper liners, g.e., modern cloth box. Provenance : Camillo Rospigliosi (binding); Comte de Salaberry (booklabel). A VERY FINE, PROBABLY UNIQUE, EXAMPLE OF A MINIATURE BAROQUE BINDING BY ANDREOLI. Executed for Camillo, brother of Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, before the latter was elected Pope as Clement IX in 1667. Lucrezia Cellesi, like her husband, was from an ancient Pistoian family. She gave him 17 children, one of whom, Giacomo, was created Cardinal by his uncle. The works are the first edition of a guide to the effective composition of speeches, followed by some panegyrics exemplifying the author's rhetorical proficiency.
