Beschreibung:

Palmer (Joseph Richardson). An aviation collection of letters, flight manuals and other ephemera, most related to J. R. Palmer, mainly comprising a quantity of typewritten letters contained in 3 ringbinders, from Palmer, mainly aviation-related and dating between 1929-1932, browned, with occasional dampstaining to blank areas, each letter housed in a separate punched pocket, together with other related ephemera including: Pilot's notes, maintenance manual, operations manual, and a Service Flying Training School manual dated 1942, all belonging to J.R. Palmer, plus a newspaper poster for the Telegraph, dated June 8 1936, with the headline 'Red Rose plane goes up in flames'; a slightly used Pilot's log book for Elizabeth Palmer, dated 1978; a large newpaper cutting relating to Palmer; a card congratulating Palmer on attaining 10,000 flight hours (with several signatures); a large monochrome photograph of Palmer standing by an aeroplane; a RAAF flying badge (or 'wings'); and 4 other Australian aviation log books and similar (not Palmer-related) (Qty: a carton) Joseph's grandfather Joseph Palmer senior founded Joseph Palmer & Sons, Australia's oldest stockbrokers, in 1872. When Joseph senior died in 1930, his grandson Joseph Richardson Palmer, who had worked in the firm since 1917, took over his Stock Exchange seat, remaining active in the family business for 76 years. In his spare time Flight Lieutenant Joseph (Joe) Palmer (as he became), was a keen aviator who flew as a civilan pilot both before and after flying with the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II. Apparently nicknamed 'Mass Production Joe', he was known for having a very high number of flying hours logged: while with No. 36 Squadron RAAF his half yearly return of flying hours cites a total of 4,652 hours (of which 3,925.35 as a pilot). The Avro Avian G-EBTU 'Red Rose' was the aeroplane in which Captain Bill Lancaster and Jessie (Chubbie) Miller attempted a record England-Australia flight in 1927-1928, Miller becoming the first woman to travel that route by air. In 1929 Joseph R. Palmer acquired the Red Rose and flew it privately including in air pageants until it was destroyed by fire when it crash-landed in June 1936.
