Hunter, Dard. Papermaking by Hand in India. New York: Pynson Printers, 1939. 4to, half-leather, gilt lettering, boards covered with hand-blocked Indian print cloth, tipped in photo of Hunter with one of his Indian friends on tp, 130pp., in handmade paper-covered slipcase with number on spine as well as title. Plus two copies of the prospectus, in which the volume is described: "The volume comprises one hundred and thirty pages of text and eighty-five photogravures, with twenty-seven paper specimens. The photogravures are produced by the hand printing process and are of special interest, being almost entirely from photographs taken by Dard Hunter ...Text and photogravures are printed on Orebro, an all rag handmade paper from Sweden. The books are hand sewn and bound by the Gerlach Studio with leather back and board sides covered with hand-blocked India print cloth. Each copy is enclosed in a slipcase covered with a handmade paper and is signed by the author and the publisher." This copy No. 58, signed by Hunter and Elmer Adler of Pynson Printers. Interestingly, Hunter evaluates Indian paper as inferior to others he has studied, especially the paper of Japan, China, and the tapas of the islands. He attributes this in large part to the poverty in India and the attitudes of those working in the paper factories. In addition, at the time India was still a British colony, and Britain did nothing to encourage or support local crafts, in part because every sheet of paper made locally was a sheet not imported from Britain. He suggested that unless the crown got out of the way, handmade papers would disappear from India within a decade. Provenance: The John Baxter Black Estate, Mansfield, OH Condition: Excellent. Barely opened.
