PAPER. HUNTER, DARD. Papermaking by Hand in India. New York (Pynson Printers) 1939. 4:o (290x225 mm.). (4), 5-129, (5, last blank) pp. 87 photogravure illustrations of papermaking in India and 27 specimens of Indian peper. Publisher's black quarter morocco with patterned paper-covered boards, slightly worn, spine stamped in blue and gilt, somewhat worn at head and foot, upper edge cut, otherwise uncut. In original paper slip-case, somewhat worn. New cloth-box. Edition printed in 370 numbered copies, signed by Hunter and Elmer Adler, the publisher, this is number 305. Hunters journey takes us through various Indian provinces, he examines the techniques used to make paper by hand in each one, and provides a valuable record of a vanishing industry. He talks of the problems facing the papermakers in finding quality raw materials, and how they have to deal with the discouragement of British colonial officials.. Highly important work, describing a dying art, and preserving remnants of its products. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
