PAPER. HUNTER, DARD. A Papermaking pilgrimage to Japan, Korea, and China. New York (Pynson Printers) 1936. 4:o (about 280x230 mm.). (5), 6-148, (2) pp. Title printed in red and black, 33 plates (including frontispiece) with 66 illustrations; 3 full-page illustrations in text. 51 specimen leaves bound in at end, specimen sheet for the paper used in the book and correction slip laid in. Publisher's black quarter morocco with patterned paper-covered boards, slightly worn, spine stamped in red and gilt, upper edge cut, otherwise uncut. Edition printed in 370 numbered copies, signed by Hunter and Elmer Adler, the publisher, this is number 276. With a typed letter, 2 leaves in 8:o with 2 pages, loosely inserted. Signed by Dard Hunter Jnr. This landmark book on hand papermaking in these countries was printed on Japanese mulberry-bark handmade paper and contains 68 photogravure illustrations taken by Hunter on his trip. See Hunter's My Life with Paper pp.127-129 for further details of the trip. The book describes the trip and the processes of hand papermaking that Hunter discovered during his journey. The specimens show a wide variety of paper from these three countries and tie in nicely with the descriptions of hundreds of different kinds of paper that he had found as well as the locations where they were produced. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
