Lehnert, a Parisian by birth, was an artist, engraver and lithographer who lived in Mexico for a number of years. It is presumed that he witnessed or was directly involved in most of the important battles between Mexico and the United States between 1846 and 1848, but the subjects depicted in this work include views, architectural scenes, and portraits of the indigenous and Spanish population. No two copies have the same complement of plates, this copy differing both from Palau and from other copies to have appeared at auction in recent years.
