Lot of 22 letters from Pennsylvania natives or soldiers that served in Pennsylvania regiments, including 28th, 40th, 42nd, 56th, 78th, 83rd, 100th, 107th, 140th, 141st, 203rd Infantries. Simon Adams Camp Distribution, Alexandria, VA, Oct. 16, 1864. Possibly 56th PA Vol. Infy. Group of three letters regarding Richard Boland, a 15-year old who had run away to join the army for the second time. The letters are between Boland's father and Lieut. Col. William Irvine, 10th NY Cav. Mr. Boland had alerted the local PA recruiters about the boy's age (since he did join the 51st PA in 1863), so apparently the determined would-be soldier hooked up with a New York unit. His father learned that he was with a Lieut. Gates, Co. K, 10th NYC after a friend received a letter from Richard. Boland's first letter is dated March 15, 1864; Lieut Col. Irvine's confirming reply is dated two days later from Warrenton, VA. Boland's reply is undated, but the father decided to leave his son where he was because he seemed to be serving Lieut. Gates rather than "soldiering." He writes: "If Lt. Gates is a conscientious man that would try to restrain youth in a course of evil I would leave Richard as he is. I don't think it would be wise to take him home at present for I am sure he would try the same thing again." Richard did later enlist in the 100-day 192nd PA VI as a private. Seth C. Hamlin, Co. B, 141st PA VI. Camp near Falmouth, Jan 26, 1863. Samuel S. Caldwell, Camp Pierpont, VA, Nov. 27, 1861. Pennsylvania "Bucktails" (13th PA Reserves / 42nd PA VI / 1st PA Rifles / Kane's Rifles). "Our Reg't. is called the Bucktail Reg't. and at the Review it was pronounced the best drilled Reg't in the service. We are used as scouts and we creep around through the woods like a pack of Indians...." George W. Broocks, Co. A., 40th PA VI, 1th Regiment, Camp Pierpont, Fairfax Co., VA, Dec. 8th, 1861. Jacob Long, 107th PA VI, Camp near the Yellow House, Dec. 17th, 1864 [near Weldon RR]. Includes description of rebel treatment of POWs. Joseph E. Kaucher, Batt. D, PA Light Arty. Camp near Petersburg, July 29th, 1864. Account of the Battle of the Crater. Henderson A. Amon, Co. B, 83rd PA VI. Headquarters, Camp Leslie, Oct. 17, [18]61. Barely six weeks into his enlistment, he gives impression of this part of Virginia, the camp, etc. Amon would die of disease July 7, 1862. Addressed to Miss Hanah Miles, "Dear Aunt and Friends." Eight letters relate to brothers Edward and William H.H. Miles, Co. E, 100th PA VI (Round Head Regiment), written between November 1861-July 1865. Seven letters come from Edward Miles Hilton Head Island, SC, Port Walker, Camp Lasene, Nov. 17th [18]61; Beaufort City, SC, Dec. 16th, 1861 (to brother William before Wm. enlisted); Beaufort City, SC, Jan 20th, 1862 (poem by Edward); Beaufort, SC, March 16, [18]62 (to sister Hannah); Camp Park, KY, Aug. 27, [18]63 (to Hannah); Camp near Crab Orchard, KY, Sept. 7th, 1863 (to parents); Harewood Hospital, April 9, 1865, the same day as Lee's surrender. Apparently word had not yet reached the hospital. Miles was sounded three times during the war (2nd Bull Run/Manassas, Petersburg, and unknown location March 1865). He was discharged for wounds 24 July 1865. The last letter is from William H.H. Miles, also in Co. E., 100th PA VI, Newport News, July 27th, 1862 (to his father). Phineas F. Hatzell, Co. C, 78th PA VI, Camp Starkweather, TN, Dec. 24th, 1863 (description of the Lookout Mountain region) Rufus Noble, Co. B, 203rd Reg't. PA VI, Raleigh, May 9, 1865. Benjamin Frank Obryon, Co. E, 140th PA VI, letter from wife to husband, Jan. 11, 1863 George N. Wagner, Co. I, 28th Reg't. PA Infy. Militia - Emergency unit raised after Gettysburg. Describes chasing the rebels to the Potomac River after the battle. Camp near Waynesboro, July 9, 1863. All letters with typed transcriptions. A large number have some battle content and references. Most with additional research and covers. Please contact Cowan's for more informati
